This is a video review of the Resmed Mirage SoftGel Nasal Mask. ( One of the best of all Resmed CPAP Masks ). This is a CPAP Nasal Mask.
In this video review I’m going to go over the good, the bad, and just point out the good features of it and the bad features so that you can make a good decision if you want to buy this or get this through your insurance. Here we go.
This is called the Resmed Mirage Soft Gel Nasal Mask , because I’m telling you this is unbelievably soft. I absolutely love this mask. I’ve had tremendous success with people using this mask, with setting patients up with this particular mask. Now, this has been very effective for stomach sleepers, back sleepers.
Now some side sleepers of ours have complained. Some of my patients have complained that they have a little bit of a CPAP mask leak issue in one sense, because you can see that it is bulky. Let me zoom in on it for you. You can see it is kind of bulky, so when you go on your side it might be knocked off a little bit. But, for the most part, a lot of them still absolutely love it.
Let me zoom back out.
I am very reluctant. Actually I am extremely reluctant to recommend this Mirage Softgel nasal mask if your CPAP settings is less than 7 or 8 centimeters of water . Here’s the reason why. At lower pressures you feel what we call air hunger, you feel like you’re not getting enough air when using this mask. I do not know the reason for this. Not every one feels it this way but plenty do.
For example, I am a CPAP user with a strength of 9. Even at 9 when I use this I feel I’m not getting enough air. What I’ll end up doing is I’ll end up cranking up my CPAP pressure just to feel that air coming at me.
Now, if you’re someone who has just gotten a CPAP machine or a Bipap machine and you are complaining, “Wow, it feels like a hurricane blowing up my nose,” I would jump and use this mask. Because something to do with the design of it, the manufacturers don’t say anything about it, but I’ve had enough people come back to me with this feedback that it tends to absorb the “oomph” or the “punch” of your high pressures. So, that is one factor that I need you to keep in mind.
Another point that I do want to bring up to you is obviously watching TV or reading in bed can be a little difficult because it’s kind of bulky. If you’re claustrophobic it is big, as you can see. It does obstruct your vision. So using this mask would be difficult.
You cannot use this mask if you have a head cold or during allergy season, if you suffer from allergies you need to use a CPAP Full Face Mask.
With that said, I’m going to jump into the head gear. The head gear is phenomenal. This is the head gear shared by almost all the sleep apnea masks made by ResMed. It comes in three sizes; small, medium, and large. Such a positive thing, because a lot of other manufacturers will only give you a one size fits most headgear. Over here you’ve got three sizes. You might have to pay extra, but you can get a different size. For the most part, medium comes with most CPAP masks.
By the way, this head gear is good if you have soft and silky hair, it doesn’t slide all over the place. I want to show you this one feature here, you will love it. See how quickly and easily I can take it off? I’m going to loosen this out. This feature makes it easy to take it off when you’re done sleeping at night also.
Because of this feature I’ve been able to recommend this and successfully have had a lot of my patients who are blind or suffering from partial weakness through stroke. They are able to use this mask just strictly because of this feature here. Let me jump forward. This is your exhalation port, let me zoom in. Look here, see that round thing? That’s your exhalation port. It is quiet, it does a good job, it doesn’t hit your bed partner. This part here swivels so that you don’t get tangled up in bed with you CPAP hose.
This part here, pretend my hand here is the tubing, if you need to use the bathroom you can always leave this on your face and walk out and this is still attached to your tubing. You come back from the bathroom and then put it back.
However, I’m a Respiratory Therapist, I’m not a big fan of using this. I would always recommend you take the mask off your face, because I don’t want anything to obstruct your field of vision and you bump into something or trip and hurt yourself.
Let me move into this feature. I’m going to take this off, use my mannequin here. You’re going to love this thing. See here? There are 24 positions you can adjust this thing to. What it does is it tilts the mask away or closer to you at 7 parts of your face. This has three purposes.
One, it helps adjust to the various facial structure we all have. It helps seal off leaks. And also it helps alleviate pressure points. If you feel uncomfortableness in a certain of your face on the mask, just do this. 24 positions, play with it and you can alleviate the pressure point. So, that is a good feature.
I want to jump to the cushion. Unbelievably soft, it makes me want to take a nap right now just holding this thing. Unlike its biggest competitor Respironics Comfort Gel and the Respironics Comfort Gel BlUE Nasal CPAP Mask, this does not have any odor when you get it out of the packaging. It’s good to go, but they always recommend you wash it first still.
Why is it so big and bulky? Well, this really helps it conform to the unique facial features we all have and it makes the mask a lot more stable. So, that’s why it’s soft and bulky.
Your biggest source of leaks with this is if you change this cushion. By the way, because this comes in small, medium, large, large-wide, this is fantastic, it fits many people nose structures. You can just replace this cushion once you’ve determined what size you want, so you don’t have to spend a lot of money and replace the whole mask very frequently, you just keep replacing this cushion. It will save you a lot of money.See this triangular clip, this blue clip here? There are three areas, one, two, and three here. When you detach it you just unclip it, pull it out, and then shove it back in. When you shove it back in you have to be careful, especially this part here. This is the part where I have to go back to many of my patient’s homes again to troubleshoot.
As you can see, this little clip here has to come through all the way. If it comes in partially, half way in, you will get a leak. So, if you ever get a leak in this region that’s your biggest source. So, just keep that in mind.
Other than that, I wholeheartedly recommend this Resmed CPAP mask. Once again, every mask has it’s pluses and minuses, but it’s a very good mask. With that, I am signing out.
